What I Love About Austin: Shiner Bock

Ain't Nothin' Finer

I won’t claim to be a beer connoisseur, in that I generally can’t speak very eloquently as to what in particular I like about this or that beer.  That being said, I do love most styles of beer, and enjoy drinking certain beers in certain situations.  If it’s cold out, I love a porter.  In bars, I usually order stouts.  If I’m with Billy D. Williams, I make it a Colt 45.

May I suggest the awesome?

When summer rolls around, usually about February 15 here in Austin, it’s time to make it a Shiner.  Continue ad nauseam until our other season, winter, rolls around; say December 15.  I can’t tell you what’s great about an ice-cold Shiner.  I can only tell you that it is great.  So great, if you look at my son’s bottle cap collection, you’ll be astounded by the number of ram’s heads staring back up at you.  It’s probably available all over, but it’s brewed right here in Shiner, Texas, a city with a population smaller than my high school.  1984 people- that’s more like a year than a population.  Thanks to Wolfram Alpha, I can tell you that’s only 139 metric tons of people.  But I digress.  Shiner Bock is my standby beer, and it goes great with an Austin summer.

As an aside, I don’t know if they changed their recipe, but my dad swears Shiner used to be one of the worst/cheapest beers in Texas.  All I know is that he drinks them now.

Any other Shiner lovers out there?  Swear your fealty now.

What I Love About Austin: Kevin Munoz

I came to a realization this morning.  Austin artist and great friend Kevin Munoz is absolutely killing it.  I wish he lived next door, because I know I would get a lot more work done. I had sort of taken it for granted, but this guy really is one of my favorite artists working today. [...]

Going Blind Googling Yourself

Everyone does it.  You’re on your laptop and you get the urge.  You peek furtively around; no one is looking.  You’ll just sneak a quick peek.  It’s no big deal.  You type in… your first and last name.  Honestly, what did you think I was talking about?  But seriously, this is an interesting phenomenon.  Just [...]

Trinity and Jesse’s Wedding

First Kiss

The ceremony for Trinity and Jesse was simply beautiful.  The weather cooperated at Lady Bird Lake after threatening rain all morning.  After the ceremony, a parade consisting of the wedding guests, the Austin Bike Zoo, and the Minor Mishap Marching Band led the party to Big Red Sun for the reception.  We had tons of [...]
