Photo Booth Groupon Extravaganza

Oh man. We just finished up with our marathon 5-day Groupon offering ($349 for a 3 hour photo booth rental, to those of you who missed it), and boy are our arms tired. From writing, I guess, or typing or something, not flying, like in the joke. But seriously, we got a nice full calendar out of it, fledgling company Groupon got some great exposure by being associated with us, and our photo booth feels like the prettiest girl at the dance.

If any of you missed it, that’s ok! We’re still the cheapest game in town, and we take what we believe are the highest quality photo booth photos around. Give us a shout and we’ll try to accommodate you- we’ve got a few spaces left in our calendar.

In the meantime, here are some real-live photo booth shots of Max Photography’s owner, Justin Elledge, fielding some of your calls during the Groupon extravaganza.

Welcome, Grouponeteers!

Howdy, all you lovely Groupon ladies and gents!  Welcome to Max Photography.  Find out all about our photo booth here. Please give us a call at (512)814-5415 or email us to check about availability.  You are, of course, more than welcome to buy a Groupon without reserving a date, but you may end up having to celebrate your birthday 3 months late.  Once we get your details, we’ll send over our agreement so we can hold the date for you.  We’ll also be checking in on Groupon’s site to see if any questions arise.

What I Love About Austin: Shiner Bock

Ain't Nothin' Finer

I won’t claim to be a beer connoisseur, in that I generally can’t speak very eloquently as to what in particular I like about this or that beer.  That being said, I do love most styles of beer, and enjoy drinking certain beers in certain situations.  If it’s cold out, I love a porter.  In bars, I usually order stouts.  If I’m with Billy D. Williams, I make it a Colt 45.

May I suggest the awesome?

When summer rolls around, usually about February 15 here in Austin, it’s time to make it a Shiner.  Continue ad nauseam until our other season, winter, rolls around; say December 15.  I can’t tell you what’s great about an ice-cold Shiner.  I can only tell you that it is great.  So great, if you look at my son’s bottle cap collection, you’ll be astounded by the number of ram’s heads staring back up at you.  It’s probably available all over, but it’s brewed right here in Shiner, Texas, a city with a population smaller than my high school.  1984 people- that’s more like a year than a population.  Thanks to Wolfram Alpha, I can tell you that’s only 139 metric tons of people.  But I digress.  Shiner Bock is my standby beer, and it goes great with an Austin summer.

As an aside, I don’t know if they changed their recipe, but my dad swears Shiner used to be one of the worst/cheapest beers in Texas.  All I know is that he drinks them now.

Any other Shiner lovers out there?  Swear your fealty now.

What I Love About Austin: Kevin Munoz

I came to a realization this morning.  Austin artist and great friend Kevin Munoz is absolutely killing it.  I wish he lived next door, because I know I would get a lot more work done.

I had sort of taken it for granted, but this guy really is one of my favorite artists working today.  He’s over at OKMT (okay mountain), and his work is consistently fantastic.  Give him some love.

Going Blind Googling Yourself

Everyone does it.  You’re on your laptop and you get the urge.  You peek furtively around; no one is looking.  You’ll just sneak a quick peek.  It’s no big deal.  You type in…

your first and last name.  Honestly, what did you think I was talking about?  But seriously, this is an interesting phenomenon.  Just searching the term “googling yourself” brings up 730,000 pages.  There is a term for it- Egosurfing.  I had no idea.  Perhaps it is due to the fact that the internet generation is the most self-referential and egotistical generation to date.  Think of it as a full-length mirror that you can bring anywhere.

And for years, I have lived in the shadow of a homonym.

Justin Elledge, a one-hit wonder of the movie world.  He appeared in a minor role in Problem Child, never to be heard from again.  He was such a bit player, his entire biography is summed up in one word: male.  I can’t even find a picture of him.  And he plagued me for years.  Always occupying the first few hits on Google.  If anyone needs reminding, Problem Child came out in 1990.  Even 15-18 years later, the ghost of this single-serving actor’s career was haunting my self-googling.

But a couple years back, after I started blogging about my business, I googled myself.  And there it was.  In black and white, 72dpi glory.  Myself, the first hit on Google.  VICTORY.  Hi-fives all around.  To myself.

Sorry, doppelganger.  Your reign of terror and mediocrity is over.

And in the extraordinarily unlikely event that the other Justin Elledge is reading this, my apologies.  We should get a beer and discuss at length our battle of egos.

Some Favorites from Talia & Tym’s Wedding

We had a wonderful time in Woodstock, New York, documenting Talia and Tym’s wedding.  The rain held off, it was a beautiful day, and everyone had a great time.  Here are some of our favorites from the day.  Click on any image to see it larger.

Photo Booth FAQ

Every so often, the photo booth divulges the answer to what it assumes is a frequently asked question.  For example:

Q: Does the photo booth save lives?

A:

A clear and decisive “Yes indeed!”

Trinity and Jesse’s Wedding

The ceremony for Trinity and Jesse was simply beautiful.  The weather cooperated at Lady Bird Lake after threatening rain all morning.  After the ceremony, a parade consisting of the wedding guests, the Austin Bike Zoo, and the Minor Mishap Marching Band led the party to Big Red Sun for the reception.  We had tons of fun photographing this wedding, and invite you to check out the pictures.

Rumors: Lightroom on iPad

What what?

Here’s what Adobe insider Terry White has to say on the matter: “Wouldn’t it be cool if we had Lightroom for the iPad? All I can say on that one is….. ;).”  That sly wink says it all: I’ll be buying an iPad soon.  Also, there is the very real, non-rumor ability of the iPad to import photos via USB card reader with an adapter.  Perfect for weddings, on-location shoots, etc.  Awesomical.

Here’s a link to Terry’s page.  Very very sweet if you’re into tech stuff.

More Photo Booth Fun!

Here are the pics from the photo booth’s sophomore effort at Trinity and Jesse’s Wedding Potluck (which was an absolute blast).  And just for fun, let’s make it a tradition: anyone caught on camera in our photo booth gets 10% off their photo booth rental.  As if people need an incentive to get in the photo booth.

Photo Booth @ Trinity & Jesse’s Wedding

Totally awesome way to break in the new photo booth.  Everything went super-smoothly (excepting the torrential downpour), and the pictures look FANTASTIC!  Thanks to everyone who got crazy in the booth!  P.S. to anyone who took pictures in the booth: become a fan of Max Photography on Facebook and get 10% off your inevitable rental of the booth!  You know you’ll need it at your next party.

Congregated @ Mosaic’s Gallery 5619

Finished up with some shots I snapped pro bono at Mosaic’s newly remodeled Gallery 5619.  That’s right, fools- pro bono!  We’re happy to lend a hand to fun and/or worthy non-profs around town.  Thanks to Don Vanderslice for making me feel totally welcome and appreciated, and Giselle Munoz (thegoodshoppe) for the invite.  Also, thanks to Kevin Munoz (forward collective) and their lovely daughter Chami just because.  By the way, go check out the show, cause there is some awesome artwork to be found.

For Sale: Nice Gear!

If you’re in the market for slightly older gear that’s been used professionally and well-taken care of, check out my eBay listings.  Taking offers now!  Lens listing starts Saturday.

On the Catwalk

I don’t know where she learned to walk like this, but she did it a lot that day.  Pretty saucy.

Perfect Spring Day

Wow.  It’s a beautiful day here in Austin, one of about 20 that we’ll get this year.  Did a little on-location scouting for an upcoming wedding, and snagged some pretty sweet pictures of the area in infrared.

Photo Booth!

ALLRIGHT!  The photo booth is official.  Extra-special thanks to my new friend Jesse Mischel, handyman extraordinaire, for his invaluable help in construction.  Pictures are coming, hopefully tomorrow, but we’re up and running.  Give us a call or email or any other form of communication you prefer for pricing and availability.  (Hint: pricing-low, availability-awesome).  Adios!

More RetroCuffs

More new shots from our friend RetroCuffs!  Fun to shoot, fun to wear.  Her website really is coming soon, and then you can get some for yourself.

Spring has Sprung

It’s pretty official.  Flowers blooming, love is in the air, I am wearing white loafers.  It’s springtime in Austin.  Here are some fun infrared pics of the kids.

Kids In Studio

It’s nice to have the studio at home. I get weird little visitors all day.
